Feb 14, 2018 OSX 10.9.5, Mac Mail Ver 7.3. Using Gmail mail servers with imap. Email messages do not arrive consistently to in box on MacBook Pro. They do arrive to mail app on iPhone. If and when they do arrive in MacBook Mail app, I usually can see the content in the preview pane or by opening the message in it's own window. My Gmail account in Mac mail errors multiple times a day 'Login Failed', clicking it initiates re-login and it works for a bit. All my software is up to date, I have two step authentication turned on, Gmail is iMap, the account has been deleted and added numerous times.

Why is Mail asking for your password?
Mail asks for your password when it is connecting to your email provider, but can't connect to your email account because your email provider isn't accepting your email password. Stock charting app for mac.
Your email provider may reject your password for several reasons, including:
You're not using your current email password. If you updated the password on another device, make sure that you're using the same password on your Mac.
Your email provider needs you to update or reset your password for security reasons. For example, if you're using Google’s two-step verification, your Gmail account in Mail requires the appropriate app-specific password.
Your email provider deactivated or suspended your account. Contact your email provider for help.
Check your password in Internet Accounts preferences
Depending on the type of email account you're using, you might be able to correct the password as follows:
Quit Mail. If it doesn't quit, you can force it to quit.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Internet Accounts.
Select your mail account in the sidebar.
If you see a password field for your account, delete the password and type the correct password.
Close System Preferences, then open Mail and try using your account again.
If Mail still asks for your password, the password is probably incorrect. Your email provider can help you verify your email settings and make sure that you're using the correct password.
Test using webmail
Many email providers offer webmail, which is a way to use email with a web browser such as Safari, instead of with an email app such as Mail. For example, if you're using an iCloud Mail account, you can use iCloud.com to send and receive email.
Because the password that you use with Mail is usually the same password that you use with webmail, try signing in to webmail with that password. If it doesn't work there either, your password is probably incorrect. Your email provider can help you verify your email settings and make sure that you're using the correct password for the Mail app.
Remove your account, then add it back
If no other solutions work, try setting up your email account again. To do that, first remove your email account, then add the account back.

1-It is possible that your iPhone or iPad may have run out of memory, and can’t start the Mail app. You may want to free up some space. First check the storage on your iOS device by going to Settings > General > iPad’s or iPhone’s Storage. You may also want to delete some of your apps, videos, photos etc that you no longer use or need to free up some storage, if space gets tight on your iPhone or iPad.

What else you may want to do is to manually offload and reinstall the Mail app without losing the app’s data. Tap Settings, and General > iPad Storage (or iPhone Storage) then scroll down and find the Mail app and tap Mail and then tap “Offload App”. Note that offloading the Mail app will delete it but it will keep its data. Then tap again to confirm “Offload App”.
Once the mail app has been deleted, simply reinstall the app. To reinstall you may go to again Settings > General > iPad Storage > Mail now you will see: Reinstall App:
Also since the Mail is an built in app, deleting it will not remove from the home screen. You will still see its icon. And tapping the icon will also reinstall the app.
2-Restart the Mail app. Close the mail app (force quit) and reopen again.
3-Remove (sign out) your email account or accounts then re-add them. To do that, go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords and then select your account scroll down and tap Sign Out. Then go to Settings> Accounts & Passwords and tap Add Account.
4-Restart your iOS device to see if it fixes the problem.
5-Make sure that your device is running the latest version of iOS software. Go to Settings > General and then Software Update.
